Fit Talks with Sue Mackenzie
Starting in September 2024 Fitness Meets Wellness will launch a new monthly series called Fit Talks.
Each month, we’ll meet for a one-hour, interactive session on Zoom to focus on an important aspect of your overall fitness, wellness and lifestyle.
The topics I’ve developed for this series are inspired by the questions and issues my clients have regularly asked me over the past 25 years working as a fitness trainer and coach.
What’s unique about this series is that each session will focus on a common issue, like managing lower back pain, the importance of maintaining balance or why a strong core is so essential to overall health.
But these sessions aren’t all talk. I’ll also offer practical strategies and techniques to address each issue. You’ll have an opportunity to try out new exercises, stretches and techniques so you leave with invaluable tools and a plan for using new knowledge in your workouts and everyday activities.
Each session builds on the previous ones so over the course of the program you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of how to transform your own fitness journey
Plus, we’ll have fun along the way.
This will be a great opportunity to change and grow in your life.
Basic Nutrition: Food for Thought
There’s a fundamental truth about fitness and wellness: the path to fitness begins in the kitchen. In this session, we’ll talk about some simple guidelines that can impact the benefit you get from the foods you eat.
Most importantly, I’ll stress how to make simple changes, one at a time, so you can have a long-term view of your own nutrition and create something that works for you.
Breathing and Stress Reduction
An often-overlooked part of our overall fitness, wellness and level of stress is how we breathe.
In this session, we’ll examine how our breathing patterns can change how we feel and we’ll talk about the benefits of being aware of those patterns. I’ll show you some invaluable breathing and mindfulness techniques to improve your overall feeling of wellness, reduce your stress and clear your mind.
Bringing It All Together: My Favorite Exercises
In our final session, we’ll tie together the concepts we’ve discussed in the previous sessions. I’ll do this by reviewing some of the exercises we’ve already covered and add some of my personal favorites that you can incorporate into your program.
This will be a great session for reviewing your overall progress and learning how to use my own list of favorite exercises for improving strength, flexibility and coordination.
Creating Your Home Workout
Start off the new year with a new home exercise routine. This class will give you tips and tools to create a fun and comprehensive home fitness program. We’ll focus on creating a home workout plan, schedule and the equipment you’ll need for a full body workout.
Balance and Mindfulness
Balance is the ability to maintain a stable and controlled body position. It is a fundamental aspect of health, and it plays a central role in our everyday activities and overall well-being.
In this session, we will review the importance of balance and the factors, like posture and stress, that impact our balance. We’ll also work together on several exercises that you can do at home to improve your overall balance.
Lower Back Stiffness
One the top ailments people see their doctors about is low back pain and stiffness.
In this session, we build on our knowledge of the core by focusing on how to use a series of exercises and stretches to help reduce general lower back stiffness.
The All-Important Core: It’s not just Abs
Many people assume that the core muscles are primarily your abdominal muscles, the abs. They are much more than that.
In this session, we’ll focus on the benefits of a strong core, like reduced lower back pain, better functional fitness and improved posture.
We’ll cover some specific techniques and exercises you can do to improve the overall strength of the powerhouse muscles we call the core.
Neck and Upper Back Stiffness
In this age of sitting at desks and in front of our computers and devices so much every day, our posture can fundamentally change for the worse.
In this session, we’ll focus on how you can use some gentle stretches and postural alignment techniques to release these areas, reduce tension and pain and help prevent recurrence of the problem.
